| Wayne Gardner, aka The Wollongong Whiz, was the 1987 500cc World Champion - the first Australian to win the premier class. He took his first ever win (in the Australian championship on a TZ250) just weeks after he started racing, and was the 1989 winner of the inaugural Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. He was a teammate of Mick Doohan, who joined his Rothmans Honda team in 1989. He also won the Suzuka 8 hours 4 times; and was very successful in touring car and V8 supercar racing amongst others. |
