Event review - Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich 2024
Alpine magic! A postcard weekend in the Styrian Mountains of Austria.
Hot sunny weather prevailed, predictions of thunderstorms thankfully never materialised apart from a biblical downpour of rain and hail Saturday after all the racing was finished. (See our photo!)
We operate two very different packages at this event - one in the lovely city of Graz in a luxury 4*+ hotel, the other right up in the mountains in a charming ski lodge, gravel roads and all!
At the Alpine package we housed our sponsored Red Bull Rookies who joined us for our Thursday 'happy hour'. Things were quite happy too at the inimitable Parkhotel Graz bar.
Friday at the track our grandstand customers had an opportunity to tour the circuit and enjoy the many quality concessions, merchandise and the sound stage -- with acts throughout the day.
We had many team guests with all 4 of our sponsored teams in MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3. Our private paddock tour explored all corners of this extensive paddock, meeting riders on the way, checking out as well the Red Bull Rookies and the fascinating eBikes. Guests did an in-depth tour of our Moto2 team Preicanos.
Friday night we enjoyed a superb dinner at our luxury hotel in Graz. We were joined by the only Australian in the Red Bull Rookies, Carter Thompson & his dad Nathan -- giving us deep insight into the path from 3 years old into the spotlight of world racing. Carter is also a replacement rider in World SBK in the SP300 class -- when in his only two outings has taken two podiums!
Saturday was hot as riders did their qualifying. Jorge Martin took the top spot - however Bagnaia took the sprint win, bringing the tournament to a tie! What an exciting series!
The Red Bull Rookies race was typically thrilling with a 6 bike shootout to the end. Carter took a very respectable 6th.
Saturday night many of our team guests stayed at the track for a meal with our team LCR Honda; and a fascinating talk from top MotoGP journalist Simon Patterson. The opportunity to meet riders in the more chilled atmosphere of the evening cool is one of the unsung benefits of this evening!
The Red Bull airforce also put in their usual appearance -- the best airshow in MotoGP!
Sunday was not only cooler, but we arrived to low-lying fog which reminded us chillingly of the thunderstorm predictions. We started the day with the 2nd Red Bull Rookies race. Sadly Carter had to retire with a brake failure after progressing to 5th. Moto3 was a 3-way duel to the end, exciting as always. Sadly the final two races were not too exciting - the Moto2 quickly became processional however we were happy our formerly sponsored rider Darryn Binder took a strong 7th. The top 3 places in MotoGP didn't surprise anyone; with Bagnaia's victory that puts him just 5 points ahead of Martin in the tournament. Our rider Marc Marquez did an amazing ride following a starting blunder, fighting his way back to 4th.
Despite the inevitable Sunday traffic we got back to our hotels well in time for dinner -- at the Alpine a final chance for dinner and beers in the lodge; in Graz we head to a traditional Austria beer garden!
We look forward to our return!
