Event review - Grand Prix of Brazil 2026
Amazing return of MotoGP to Brazil!
To be honest we were expecting many problems with the new MotoGP in Goiania so as our usual policy we kept the initial tour small with two guides, including Portugese speaking Bruno.
Our introduction to Brazil was not good - our luggage with all the customer gear including the special ‘Inaugural MotoGP of Brazil’ polo shirts was lost. However this did not diminish the excitement of the small group as several came up with us Thursday afternoon to see the track for the first time. While there were clearly a few works in progress, the track and facilities all seemed ready to go - and reports from the riders we met who had walked the track were very positive. We walked the huge main straight and visited the start grid!
In the evening we met for our welcome drinks by the hotel pool. This inevitably ended up at the nearby local Churrascaria for our first taste of Brazilian food & hospitality!
Friday at the track had very mixed weather - alternating between biblical rainfall and scorching hot! But we got to see all the bikes hit the track for the first time. We were especially excited to see one of our sponsored riders Cormac Buchanan take P5 in the first session and P2 in the second! Brazilian star Diogo Moreira also showed up well on his home track consistently mid field.
Friday night we were joined over drinks by veteran Irish journalist Simon Patterson who gave us considerable insight into the latest rumours surrounding MotoGP as well as specific complaints riders were having about the track conditions. He was soon to be proven all too correct! We prepared back to the churrascaria for a traditional Brazilian BQ feast - bottomless beer & wine and endless foods — mainly meats being placed in front of us until we surrendered!
Saturday was hot and humid, and this apparently caused a sink hole to appear on the main straight. Needless to say this disrupted proceedings! However after some delay and re-scheduling, they managed to get the Sprint underway about 1.5 hours late, and moved the Moto3 qualifications to after the race, Moto2 to Sunday morning. The sprint itself was a great duel with Marc edging our Digi in the final lap to grab victory!
In the Moto3 qualifiers, sadly Cormac had a nasty high side in his opening lap, and never managed to post a time, thus unable to capitalise on his sensation Friday results.
A personal victory was had in the evening when the airline reported they had found our luggage bag, and we were able to retrieve it and finally distribute the welcome packs!
Sunday racing did not disappoint. In Moto3, our partner team Aspar took a sensational victory with Quiles. Our Moto3 team Mlav put both riders in the points; sadly Cormac scored zero along with his team mate and another sponsored rider Ruche Moodley.
In Moto2, Aspar won again (with Holgado) although not the most exciting of races.
Apparently all the heat and traffic caused some breakup of the track surface and riders were being pelted with pellets - especially in the Motogp. However that didn’t stop the race, but it did shorten it. A sensational Aprilia 1-2 has really set the challenge to Ducati this year, ending their presumed dominance.
It has to be said that the traffic management throughout the weekend was superb, and even leaving Sunday the delays were minimal. After a few more beers by the pool we hit up a very local restaurant where the Brazilians are being very Brazilian with live music, dancing, more great cocktails and enormous platters of food! A perfect close to the first Brazilian MotoGP!
We will definitely be coming back to this one!!
