How good can a WorldSBK be??
Portimão felt like one of those trips that sneaks up on you — you arrive thinking it’ll be “just a race weekend,” and by Sunday you’ve made friends, eaten things you can’t pronounce, and already started planning your return.
There is a reason why Portimao SBK is nearly always our top SBK event! It pretty much hits all the high points.

Our Portugese-speaking team flew in from the Brazil MotoGP to perfect weather which banished all jet lag and the overnight flight with crying children!
Our personal Thursday highlight was the receipt by our founder and managing director Gordon of permanent paddock and parking passes! This was only his second ever in SBK and a reflection of the respect the organisers have for Pole Position Travel.
That small triumph aside, we met a small group of our guests in the evening for our traditional welcome drink and briefing at our sublime boutique hotel base of the Villa Marinazhina Charming Hotel. After receiving their welcome packs, we repaired to our "home away from home" - the Croke Park Irish bar owned by the same folk who have the hotel, and staffed by old friends who greet us by name after 9 years of patronage.
In what was to become a theme of the weekend, a major sporting event was taking place, shown in the pub: the World Cup qualifier of Ireland vs. Czech Republic. With his Czech family, Gordon was in a delicate position of rooting for the unpopular team in an Irish pub filled with Irish... His cheer when the Czechs won on the final penalty shot rang out on a quiet bar, prompting a hasty exit... :-)

Friday was the first of three perfect weather days. A great day to explore the circuit! In the evening we had a welcome dinner at a very popular traditional Portugese restaurant. We were honoured to have as a special guest our supported Sportbike racer from Australia Carter Thompson - 2nd overall in last year's final SSP300 class. We got a real insight into this new class, the challenges, and especially the problems with the Yamaha R7s -- all consistently the slowest in the class.
And to prove we chose the right restaurant, after exiting past the queue waiting to get in, there was a Ducati Jorge Martin replica MotoGP bike on display at the entrance!
Another perfect day on Saturday saw the first days of the SBK Garage hospitality and the VIP SPK Pit lounge. Both are fantastically good value for money and our customers who were split between these two as well as Bimota team had a great experience.
One of the coolest features of SBK is that there were no fewer than nine races across four classes during the weekend. Never a dull moment! Maybe unsurprisingly the least interesting race was the super Bike with a podium 123 that would be replicate it in all three races during the weekend. Unfortunately, Fridays predictions from Carter about the Yamahas proved true in the Sportbike race with all Yamahas clustered at the back of the results. Carter was second fastest Yamaha with his teammate only one position and a few tenths of a second ahead of him. Sunday he will go on to be the first Yamaha but still sadly well back in the standings.
Saturday night several of us repaired to our favourite Irish bar to watch the MotoGP sprint race taking place in Texas. Sorry to say it was more exciting than the superbike race but hard to imagine a better venue than beautiful Portugal with great beer in a friendly bar with fellow fans! Still nothing beats being here!
As usual Race day Sunday seem to be over minutes after we arrived at the track! With five races kicking off with the Superpole Race the only real question facing us was where are we going to watch from? We have many choices! We also paid a visit to the awesome tower Vip with incredible views - possibly the best in MotoGP or WorldSBK.
As always the staff at the SBK Pit lounge were fantastic even organising a special 70th birthday celebration for our guest Robin! The Prosecco was not so bad either...
After an optional closing dinner at one of our favourite Portuguese restaurants - another amazing meal complimented by stunning local vinho verde wine - a group of us watched the Texas MotoGP race from guess where? :-) Another thrilling race, another convivial setting, more great Portuguese beer and hospitality, this was the perfect close to a perfect weekend!
